Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (Hindustani: . Indira Gandhi was the only child of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. She served as Prime Minister from 1. Prime Minister after her father. Gandhi served as her father's personal assistant and hostess during his tenure as prime minister between 1. She was elected Congress President in 1. Upon her father's death in 1. Gandhi refused to enter the Congress party leadership contest and instead chose to become a cabinet minister in the government led by Lal Bahadur Shastri. In the Congress Party's parliamentary leadership election held in early 1. Shastri, she defeated her rival, Morarji Desai, to become leader; and, thus, succeeded Shastri as Prime Minister of India. As the Prime Minister of India, Gandhi was known for her political ruthlessness and unprecedented centralisation of power. She went to war with Pakistan in support of the independence movement and war of independence in East Pakistan, which resulted in an Indian victory and the creation of Bangladesh, as well as increasing India's influence to the point where it became the regional hegemon of South Asia. Gandhi also presided over a controversial state of emergency from 1. Prime Minister's Programme for Youth. Prime Minister's Youth Programme is a revolutionary programme for the socio-economic development of youth, in a bid to combat soaring unemployment in the country. It has a broad canvas of. Sikh bodyguards a few months after she ordered the storming of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar to counter the Punjab insurgency. Early life and career. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a leading figure in India's political struggle for independence from British rule, and became the first Prime Minister of the Union (and later Republic) of India. She was the only child (a younger brother was born, but died young), and grew up with her mother, Kamala Nehru, at the Anand Bhavan; a large family estate in Allahabad. She had a lonely and unhappy childhood. Her father was often away, directing political activities or being incarcerated in prison, while her mother was frequently bed- ridden with illness, and later suffered an early death from tuberculosis. She had limited contact with her father, mostly through letters. Indira was mostly taught at home by tutors, and intermittently attended school until matriculation in 1. She was a student at the Modern School in Delhi, St Cecilia's and St Mary's Christian convent schools in Allahabad. It was during her interview that Rabindranath Tagore named her Priyadarshini, and she came to be known as Indira Priyadarshini Nehru. A year later, however, she had to leave university to attend to her ailing mother in Europe. While there, it was decided that Indira would continue her education at the University of Oxford. After her mother died, she briefly attended the Badminton School before enrolling at Somerville College in 1. Indira had to take the entrance examination twice, having failed at her first attempt with a poor performance in Latin. At Oxford, she did well in history, political science and economics, but her grades in Latin. She did, however, have an active part within the student life of the university, such as the Oxford Majlis Asian Society. Indira, who is dressed in a khadi garment, is following Gandhi's advocacy that khadi be worn by all Indians instead of British- made textiles. Indira Nehru c. She had to make repeated trips to Switzerland to recover, disrupting her studies. She was being treated there in 1. Nazi armies rapidly conquered Europe. Gandhi tried to return to England through Portugal but was left stranded for nearly two months. She managed to enter England in early 1. India without completing her studies at Oxford. The university later awarded her an honorary degree. In 2. 01. 0, Oxford further honoured her by selecting her as one of the ten Oxasians, illustrious Asian graduates from the University of Oxford. The marriage took place in Allahabad according to Adi Dharm rituals though Feroze belonged to a Zorastrian. Parsi family of Gujarat. Indira Gandhi after her marriage, served her father unofficially as a personal assistant during his tenure as the first Prime Minister of India. In that capacity, she was instrumental in getting the Communist led Kerala State Government dismissed in 1. That government had the distinction of being India's first ever elected Communist Government. Congress party veteran, Kamaraj was instrumental in achieving Indira's victory. In 1. 96. 9, after falling out with senior party leaders on a number of issues, the party president S. Nijalingappa expelled her from the party. The policies of the Congress under Indira Gandhi, prior to the 1. Privy Purse to former rulers of the Princely states and the 1. India. The internal structure of the Congress Party had withered following its numerous splits, leaving it entirely dependent on her leadership for its election fortunes. Garibi Hatao (Eradicate Poverty) was the theme for Gandhi's 1. On the other hand, the combined opposition alliance had a two word manifesto of . This would allow her to bypass the dominant rural castes both in and of state and local governments; likewise the urban commercial class. And, for their part, the previously voiceless poor would at last gain both political worth and political weight. The programs created through Garibi Hatao, though carried out locally, were funded and developed by the Central Government in New Delhi. The program was supervised and staffed by the Indian National Congress party. Some sources claim she was hailed as Goddess Durga by opposition leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee at that time. Some of these were due to high inflation which was in turn caused by war time expenses, drought in some parts of the country and more importantly, the 1. The opposition to Gandhi in 1. Indira wave had receded, was strongest in Bihar and Gujarat. In Bihar, Jayaprakash Narayan, the veteran leader came out of retirement to lead the protest movement there. In an election petition filed by Raj Narain (who later on defeated her in 1. Rae Bareily), he had alleged several major as well as minor instances of using government resources for campaigning. The Prime Minister must be a member of either the Lok Sabha (the lower house in the Parliament of India) or a member of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house). Thus, this decision effectively removed her from office. Gandhi had asked one of her colleagues in government, Mr. Ashoke Kumar Sen to defend her in court. But Gandhi rejected calls to resign and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. The verdict was delivered by Mr Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha at Allahabad High Court. It came almost four years after the case was brought by Raj Narain, the premier's defeated opponent in the 1. Gandhi, who gave evidence in her defence during the trial, was found guilty of dishonest election practices, excessive election expenditure, and of using government machinery and officials for party purposes. And she dismissed criticism of the way her Congress Party raised election campaign money, saying all parties used the same methods. The prime minister retained the support of her party, which issued a statement backing her. After news of the verdict spread, hundreds of supporters demonstrated outside her house, pledging their loyalty. Indian High Commissioner BK Nehru said Gandhi's conviction would not harm her political career. Her Cabinet and government then recommended that President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declare a state of emergency because of the disorder and lawlessness following the Allahabad High Court decision. Accordingly, Ahmed declared a State of Emergency caused by internal disorder, based on the provisions of Article 3. Constitution, on 2. June 1. 97. 5. Rule by decree. Finally, the impending legislative assembly elections were indefinitely postponed, with all opposition- controlled state governments being removed by virtue of the constitutional provision allowing for a dismissal of a state government on recommendation of the state's governor. Indira Gandhi used the emergency provisions to change conflicting party members. Unlike her father Jawaharlal Nehru, who preferred to deal with strong chief ministers in control of their legislative parties and state party organizations, Mrs. Gandhi set out to remove every Congress chief minister who had an independent base and to replace each of them with ministers personally loyal to her.. Even so, stability could not be maintained in the states.. Sanjay wielded tremendous power during the emergency without holding any Government office. According to Mark Tully, . Gandhi may have grossly misjudged her popularity. In any case, she was opposed by the Janata alliance of Opposition parties. Janata alliance, with Jai Prakash Narayan as its spiritual guide, claimed the elections were the last chance for India to choose between . The prevailing rumour was that Sanjay had intentions of dislodging Gandhi and the trio stood between that. Gandhi's Congress party was crushed soundly in the elections. The public realized the statement and motto of the Janata Party alliance. Indira and Sanjay Gandhi both lost their seats, and Congress was cut down to 1. Lok Sabha), 9. 2 of which were in the South. The Janata alliance, under the leadership of Morarji Desai, came into power after the State of Emergency was lifted. The alliance parties later merged to form the Janata Party under the guidance of Gandhian leader, Jayaprakash Narayan. The other leaders of the Janata Party were Charan Singh, Raj Narain, George Fernandes and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In opposition and return to power. In addition, obesity negatively affects the economic health of a society as well as other aspects of adult and child health, often for life. For instance, in the United States, the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) reports that the year 2. But in 2. 00. 6, the most recent year for which statistics are available, there were 1. Usually, by 1. 8 months after the surgery, patients report having lost anywhere from 4. Body lifting. One such undesirable side effect that is very bothersome and visible is the loose, hanging skin that covers much of a weight loss patient's body. Because hundreds of pounds have stretched the patient's skin to the maximum, it has lost its elasticity and the ability to spring back. Instead, the newly slimmed patient must deal with so much extra hanging skin, he or she can actually stumble on an overhanging panniculus, the large apron of skin hanging from the stomach that can cover the pubis and groin areas. Notably, many extra inches (and sometimes, feet) of floppy skin hang from the upper arms, the chest, the stomach, the upper thighs and buttocks. Most people who have lost massive amounts of weight complain about the difficulty of getting their fleshy arms into sleeves and their excess stomach skin tucked into clothing. Most women in this state condition require a mastopexy, or breast lift, often in conjunction with breast implants. Men who have body shaping surgery usually undergo male breast reduction surgery to remove the pendulous skin hanging from their chests. The extra rolls and sheets of skin rub against each other, creating many spots of irritation and leading to hygienic difficulties. The masses of excess skin also make any form of exercise difficult. While the procedure is expensive, often running in the neighbourhood of US$2. Most surgeons break the surgical task into an upper, and a lower, body lift. A lower body lift removes the sagging skin on the back, abdomen, buttocks and thighs while the upper body procedure removes loose skin from the arms, breasts and chest. Potential risks and side- effects. The process requires a commitment on the part of the patient who must stay with the program through bariatric surgery, during the 1. Often, beginning to end takes three years. Plastic surgeons advise patients that body shaping is not an obesity operation. A patient who is more than 5. Other medical considerations the plastic surgeon must take into account include scars already present on the body, current medical conditions like heart disease or bleeding disorders, and if the patient smokes. Other possible risks include infections and reactions and complications due to being under anesthesia for longer than six hours. The patient may also experience seroma, a buildup of fluid; dehiscence (wound separation) and deep vein thrombosis (blood clots forming in the legs.) Rare complications include lymphatic injury and major wound dehiscence. The hospital stay for the procedure can require from one to four days while recovery can require about a month for a total body lift. Essentially, the patient trades . But skin relaxation is always a risk and may not be stopped with a single procedure. But if the patient is a smoker, has a history of deep venous thrombosis or clotting disorders along with a high BMI and other medical risk factors, the surgeon will probably insist on doing several short procedures in a hospital setting to insure maximum safety for the patient. The following are the individual components of body contouring: Arm lift or brachioplasty. The extra flesh on the arms of bariatric patients virtually always appears on the underside of the upper arm and is sometimes referred to as . Surgeons make incisions made from the armpit to the elbow to remove the skin and create a more pleasing contour. Consequently, surgeons open the arm on its underside so that the resulting scar is fairly well hidden. A brachioplasty procedure can employ some liposuction after the incision is made. With the arm opened, the surgeon pulls the skin tight and then trims away the excess skin which, depending on the patient, can be a pound of skin per arm or more. Breast lift or mastopexy. By trimming excess tissue from the upper breast, the surgeon can move breasts which usually droop to the umbillicus to a more upright and full position. The procedure also often requires an implant to make up for lost fat and tissue inside the breast. Scars on women are almost always hidden inside the area covered by the bra. Stomach lift or abdominoplasty. Excess skin hanging down over the pubic region is often the distorting feature that most concerns and bothers patients. The stomach pannus retains moisture, and causes rashes due to skin rubbing against itself which usually leads to poor hygiene. While the surgical procedure to remove it is known as a panniculectomy, there is often more work to be done for patients who suffer from large amounts of hanging skin. To provide improved contours on the waist, back and flanks, surgeons sometimes perform a belt lipectomy, (also known as a torsoplasty or a circumferential lipectomy). The surgeon uses more liposuction on the stomach and flanks while trimming excess skin from the patient's back and sides as well. The abdominoplasty and belt lipectomy incisions are placed so that the resulting scar is hidden within most underwear and swimsuits. Lower body lift trims excess skin on the buttocks and thighs. For an inner thigh lift, the surgeon makes an incision high on the inner leg, starting near the groin and continuing down to the knee. Some fat may be removed with liposuction. The surgeon then removes excess skin and redrapes the remaining skin before closing the long incision, leaving the patient with tighter and more attractive thighs. The outer thigh and buttock can be lifted through a hip- to- hip incision across the back, above the buttocks. Note: Surgical body contouring in the post- operative phase, requires several treatments of non- surgical lymphatic massage. This post- surgical therapy is required to aid in the reduction of swelling, water retention, bruising and scarring. SPACES FOR CHILDREN RESOURCESEIGHT STEPS IN THE DESIGN PROCESSFOR CHILDCARE CENTERSThere are eight distinct steps in the design process for a successful children’s environment. Understanding the role of each of these steps will facilitate a smoother working relationship with Spaces for Children in designing your center. The steps are: 1. Construction Documentation. Bidding and Negotiation. Construction Administration. Post- Occupancy Training. Our mission at Spaces for Children is to create high quality, economical childcare facilities that support your program’s ability to provide quality childcare.
To this end we believe that it is important to consider criteria for quality care and best practices in the initial Feasibility Study and Programming phases. For example, program design elements such as group size, classroom size, the indoor- outdoor relationship, and easily accessed diapering and toileting facilities with adjacent handwashing sinks all have a great impact on the functioning of the center, and also have many ramifications on all aspects of the building design and costs. Considering these and other key elements up front helps us to create centers that support the teachers’ roles as facilitators of children’s learning and development, and the amount of . Child- directed learning is then promoted instead of prevented. In fact, we believe the design of the facility to be a critical factor in optimizing a teacher’s competency. In a very real way, a well- designed center becomes a tool for the teachers’ professional development. We consider all significant design criteria up front during the Feasibility Study and Programming phases, and carry this information through the subsequent phases of design, to insure that the physical design optimizes the funds available to promote quality care for children as well as a supportive work environment for the staff. Feasibility Study. Designing and implementing training programs. 52 / Designing and implementing training programs 52.3. These six steps to program evaluation can help put your organization on the right track for. You can compare evaluation data with targets set for the program, against standards established by your. This first step undertakes to examine the issues that will make the project feasible or unfeasible, and in some cases to determine the best strategy for proceeding with the project. The following may be addressed in the Feasibility Study: Budget and scope of the project: Will the proposed project work at the desired budget? Site analysis: Is the site chosen suitable? Is it zoned for the project? Are there sufficient parking, utilities, etc.? For some projects, Spaces for Children assists in analyzing several sites to assess the feasibility of their use for the proposed project. In this sample chapter from Sams Teach Yourself Beginning Programming in 24. Beginning Programming: Designing a Program. Understanding the importance of program design. Mastering the three steps required to. What is the best strategy for developing the project on a given site? What is the optimal size and type of building and play yard? Will a specific building work? Is the building or site chosen structurally sound? What will be required in the way of soils tests, seismic upgrades, etc.? How will other site considerations, such as sound levels, traffic, etc., affect the project? Are there any toxins or hazardous materials to be dealt with? What other cost, planning, and design constraints might the project run into? Preparation of a report which documents all of the findings of the study and makes recommendations for proceeding with the next steps of the project. By addressing these questions up front, we can avoid costly and frustrating surprises down the road. Programming. Programming is the process used to arrive at the set of criteria on which the design is based, and by which it is later evaluated. The programming phase is where the project is built—not brick by brick, but decision by decision. This is the time when a common vocabulary for the project is created, and preferences and requirements are determined and built into the overall picture before time is invested in design. One of the most important purposes of the program is to reduce the need for later backtracking and redesign. A thorough programming process is essential for maintaining an orderly and cost- effective design process later in the project. We have found that many problems that people encounter with the design of their centers could have been avoided with a thorough programming process. Spaces for Children goes through a detailed list of criteria with the client, looking for program needs that translate into square footage or other design requirements. For example, one of many questions for infant care that we would ask would be if the school or parents will provide the diapers, and if cloth or disposable diapers would be used. In this simple example, if the design does not accommodate the center’s needs, there will be problems with storage space, delivery, and odors in the classrooms. Programming is the process where Spaces for Children goes through all the needs of the center so that appropriate design decisions can be made later in the process. Spaces for Children encourages clients to get directly involved in establishing the program. Programming usually involves a meeting or series of meetings with the center’s director, and in many cases the teachers, other staff, and possibly parents. In the programming meetings, the client’s specific goals, priorities, and uses for the spaces are discussed in detail. Spaces for Children will encourage the client to consider all important issues up front, help the client understand the ramifications of their decisions, and make recommendations based on past experience and professional knowledge. All of the requirements of the project are then put into a clearly- organized written program which will be a reference throughout the design process. If, however, the client would like to play a less active role in establishing the program, Spaces for Children can develop a complete project program for the client’s review based on our experience designing dozens of child care facilities. Items specifically analyzed in the programming phase typically include the following: Goals, needs, wishes, limitations, expectations, aesthetics. Scope of work: the number of children in the program; size of the building; number of rooms; room adjacencies. Activities to occur in each room and outdoor play area. The Center’s Education Program: Pedagogical philosophy; parent interaction; staffing; meals; etc. Classroom observation. Safety and security requirements. Existing and new utility locations and requirements. Site context: Weather, noise, solar access, vehicular access, handicap accessibility, sense of entry, site analysis. Codes and regulations: Outline of planning and building department parameters. Budget and priorities: Preliminary cost analysis usually based on area and/or volume, to be refined later. Project Scheduling. In the case of reusing an existing building: Carefully document and evaluate present building and its conditions. Determine what can be reused, what must be discarded, what must be rebuilt. Schematic Design. Based on an approved Program, the Schematic Design synthesizes the program into a defined, feasible design. The design will be shown in the form of Schematic Drawings, and in some cases a study model. The Schematic Design will address all significant areas of design and will be reviewed with the client before proceeding with more detailed drawings. A preliminary cost estimate is also usually provided at this stage. Work in this phase typically includes the following: Complete preliminary building floor plans, sections, and elevations to determine space dimensions, areas, and volumes; sketches and site plans showing circulation, uses, relationships of spaces. Complete room layout of all child- related furniture, plumbing fixtures, etc. Preliminary material choices. Preliminary landscape concepts. Preliminary play yard layout. Study model, if appropriate. Address preliminary mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues. Answer preliminary civil engineering questions (paving, grading, drainage, etc.) and structural engineering questions (structural system, soils, etc.). Coordination with engineering, landscape, and other consultants as necessary (structural, mechanical, electrical, landscape, civil engineers, etc.). Code research and coordination with regulating agencies (licensing, building department, planning department, etc.). Preliminary cost estimate. Present design to interested parties. Revise design subsequent to client discussions. Design Development. Based on an approved Schematic Design, Design Development is the process of refining and fixing the design, and working out all the details, including the selection of materials and the engineering systems. The aim is to finalize all design decisions before proceeding with Construction Documents, the more detailed and expensive documents that the contractor will need to complete the project. A more detailed cost estimate may also be provided at this phase. In smaller projects, Design Development may become part of the Schematic and Construction Document phases, rather than being a distinct phase of its own. The Design Development package will be reviewed with the client before proceeding further with the project. Work in this phase typically includes the following: Finalize all engineering issues such as structural system, heating and cooling systems, lighting system, etc. Coordinate with other design consultants, such as mechanical engineer, acoustical engineer, structural engineer, landscape architect, etc., on final systems and design. Finalize construction techniques and materials. Finalize equipment requirements, sizes, furniture layout. Finalize all design issues that affect the look of the building and the feel of the rooms. Choose finish materials. Finalize code issues. Complete outline specifications, a written list of criteria for materials and building methods. Revise cost estimate, considering probable labor and material requirements. Construction Documentation. Based on approved Design Development documents, construction drawings and written specifications are put together which describe in detail all of the construction work to be done. |
